Phases of Medication-Assisted Treatment and Who Can Benefit in Houston, TX

Medication-Assisted Treatment and Who Can Benefit in Houston, TX

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is available for individuals who have opioid addiction or alcohol use disorder (AUD). The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has approved several medications as effective treatments for these types of substance use disorders, alongside mental health counseling and other behavioral therapies. Continue reading this blog by experts from our Houston alcohol rehab to learn how Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) works, explore its phases, and understand who can benefit from it. Reach out to us today and let us help you take control of your life.

Understanding How MAT Medications Work

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) alleviates withdrawal symptoms associated with opioid addiction reducing both physical discomfort and cravings. This allows individuals to focus more effectively on therapy and long-term recovery. The medications work by binding to the brain’s opioid receptors either partially or completely blocking the euphoric effects of opioids. These medications are referred to as partial or full agonists. Your healthcare provider will determine the most appropriate medication for you.

Phases of Medication-Assisted Treatment

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) typically consists of three key phases: induction, stabilization, and maintenance.

  • Induction

The initial phase, induction, typically lasts for several days. Induction requires scheduling an appointment and abstaining from drug use for 16 to 48 hours before the appointment to initiate a withdrawal. After arrival, your healthcare team will evaluate your withdrawal symptoms to determine the appropriate medication, and you will receive the initial dose, which can be adjusted. You will receive a prescription for your prescribed dosage and must attend follow-up appointments over the next few days, which will include drug screening tests.

  • Stabilization

The second phase, last for several weeks. This phase focuses on determining the right dose for you. During this period, you may be referred to additional recovery programs, such as counseling or therapy. It’s important to inform your provider if you experience withdrawal symptoms or cravings. You’ll also work with your provider to establish treatment goals. As you meet these goals and show consistent progress, your medication dosage may be gradually reduced.

  • Maintenance

The last phase, maintenance, varies significantly across individuals. You will remain in the phase for the required duration. You will continue following your prescribed dosage and regularly consult with your healthcare provider. Many professionals recommend that individuals remain on Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for 12 to 18 months.  After mutual agreement between you and your provider to end treatment, your dosage will be gradually reduced until you are completely off the medication.

Who Can Benefit from Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)?

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is an effective method for individuals struggling with drug use disorders, including opioid use disorder and alcohol use disorder. This treatment modality integrates medications with counseling and behavioral therapies to provide a comprehensive, whole-person approach to treating not just the addiction, but the individual behind it. MAT is especially beneficial when traditional treatment strategies, such as abstinence or therapy alone, have proven ineffective, or when physical cravings are so severe that they substantially hinder recovery. MAT is especially suitable for individuals who are committed to overcoming their addiction but find that willpower or therapy alone is not enough. It is essential for those who have undergone several relapses or those with co-occurring mental health conditions that intensify their substance use disorder. Medication-assisted treatment provides a more comprehensive and potentially more effective approach to recovery by addressing both the physical and mental aspects of addiction. At our Houston alcohol rehab, we’ll help determine the right medication to ensure a safe and comfortable withdrawal experience. You don’t have to face this alone, contact us today.
